Low-Dose Chest CT
What is a Low-Dose Chest CT?
Low-dose chest CT is an examination that uses X-rays to create detailed images of the lungs. Unlike conventional chest CT, it uses a significantly lower radiation dose, making it safer for early detection of lung cancer in high-risk individuals.
What is this procedure used for?
Low-dose chest CT is used for:
- Detecting lung cancer in its initial stages: Early detection of lung cancer increases the chances of successful treatment.
- Performing lung cancer screening in high-risk individuals: Recommended for smokers or ex-smokers with certain age and smoking criteria.
Benefits of high technology in Low-Dose Chest CT
Low-dose chest CT uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed images of the lungs. The radiation dose used is significantly lower than that of a conventional chest CT.

How is the procedure performed?
The low-dose chest CT procedure consists of:
-
Preparation:
Generally, you do not need special preparation for this exam. You can eat and drink normally, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. If you are pregnant or think you might be, it is important to inform the medical team. It is also relevant to report any medication allergies you may have.
-
During the test:
To perform the test, you will be asked to lie on your back on the CT scanner table. During the exam, you will need to hold your breath for a few seconds while images are captured. The procedure is quick and usually lasts between 5 and 10 minutes.
-
After the test:
After the exam, you can resume your normal activities immediately. A radiologist will analyze the results of the low-dose chest CT and send them to your doctor, who will explain the findings and, if necessary, indicate the most appropriate treatment. If any abnormalities are detected, you may need additional tests, such as a conventional chest CT.
Are there any risks?
Low-dose chest CT is generally safe, but there are some risks:
- Radiation exposure: CT uses X-rays, which involves a small exposure to radiation. However, the radiation dose is significantly lower than that of a conventional chest CT.
- False positives: Low-dose chest CT can detect abnormalities that are not cancerous (false positives).
- Anxiety: The results of the Low-Dose Chest CT can cause anxiety, especially if abnormalities are detected.
For your test to proceed smoothly, we ask that you arrive in advance of your scheduled time. This will allow us to complete the necessary administrative and clinical preparation.
Before the test, we will provide you with the Informed Consent form, a document with important information that you must read and sign.
These diagnostic tests are very safe, but as with any medical procedure, there is a minimal possibility of incidence.
