What is orthostatic hypotension?

Neurogenic orthostatic hypotension can be more severe and difficult to treat than other types.

Some of the most common non-pharmacological measures include increasing fluid intake and salt to help increase blood volume and raise blood pressure. It is recommended to drink at least 2–3 liters of fluids per day and increase salt intake to 10 grams per day, unless you have other medical conditions that prevent you from doing so. It is also recommended to use compression stockings, which help improve blood flow from the legs to the heart. It is recommended to wear stockings that reach the waist to obtain the maximum benefit. Perform exercises to strengthen the leg muscles helps improve venous return and raise blood pressure. Some recommended exercises include walking, swimming, and cycling. Sudden changes in position should be avoided. Standing up slowly can help prevent dizziness and fainting. It is recommended to take a few seconds to sit on the edge of the bed before standing up. Some of the medications used to treat orthostatic hypotension include midodrine (which helps raise blood pressure by narrowing blood vessels) and fludrocortisone (which helps increase blood volume by promoting sodium and water retention). 
  • Surgical treatments: in rare cases, surgery may be necessary to correct heart problems that contribute to orthostatic hypotension. These surgical procedures can help improve heart function and regulate blood pressure.
