Low-dose chest CT scan

What is a low-dose chest CT scan?

A low-dose chest CT scan is an examination that uses X-rays to create detailed images of the lungs. Unlike conventional chest CT, it uses a significantly lower dose of radiation, making it a safer option for the early detection of lung cancer in high-risk individuals.

What is the purpose of this procedure?

Low-dose chest CT is used for:

  • Detecting lung cancer in its early stages: Detecting lung cancer early increases the chances of successful treatment.
  • Lung cancer screenings in high-risk individuals: It is recommended for smokers or ex-smokers who meet certain age and smoking criteria.

Benefits of advanced technology in low-dose chest CT scan

A low-dose chest CT scan uses X-rays and a computer to create detailed images of the lungs. The radiation dose used is significantly lower than that of a conventional chest CT scan.

What does the procedure involve?

The low-dose chest CT procedure consists of:

  • Preparation:

You generally do not need any special preparation for this scan. You can eat and drink normally, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. If you are pregnant or think you might be, it is important to inform the medical team. It is also important to inform the medical team if you have any drug allergies.

  • During the procedure:

To perform the procedure, you will be asked to lie on your back on the CT scanner table. During the exam, you will need to hold your breath for a few seconds while the images are captured. The procedure usually lasts between 5 and 10 minutes.

  • After the procedure:

You can resume your normal activities immediately after the procedure. The results of the low-dose chest CT scan will be analyzed by a radiologist and sent to your doctor, who will explain the findings and recommend the appropriate treatment, if necessary. If an abnormality is detected, you may need to have additional tests, such as a standard chest CT scan.

Are there any risks?

A low-dose chest CT scan is generally safe, but there are some risks:

  • Exposure to radiation: CT uses X-rays, which involves a small amount of exposure to radiation. However, the dose of radiation is significantly lower than that of a conventional chest CT scan.
  • False positives: Low-dose chest CT can detect abnormalities that are not cancerous (false positives).
  • Anxiety: Low-dose chest CT results can cause anxiety, especially if abnormalities are detected.

To ensure your procedure runs smoothly, we ask that you arrive before the scheduled time. This will allow us to complete the necessary administrative and clinical preparation.
