Cardiovascular Risk Unit
Who is it for?
This Unit is aimed at individuals who have already experienced a vascular event (such as a heart attack, stroke, or arterial obstruction) or who present a very high cardiovascular risk, even if they haven’t yet developed a clinical disease. This includes, for example, patients with familial hypercholesterolemia or other genetic or clinical conditions that significantly increase the risk of suffering a cardiovascular event.
Atherosclerosis (or atherothrombotic disease) is a systemic disease. This means it is not limited to one area of the body but can affect different organs and territories:
- The heart, causing heart attacks or angina pectoris.
- The brain, leading to strokes or transient ischemic attacks.
- Peripheral arteries, causing circulatory problems in the legs, kidneys, or carotid arteries.
Although the symptoms vary, all these processes have the same origin and, therefore, require a common approach to control and treatment.
What are the objectives of this Unit?
- To prevent new events in those who have already had a manifestation of vascular disease (secondary prevention).
- To prevent the first event in individuals with very high cardiovascular risk (high-impact primary prevention).
- To unify criteria among the different specialists attending the patient.
- To optimize treatments and follow-up in an individualized manner, based on the best scientific evidence.
